Para todos los que nos leen tenemos el gusto de presentar la entrevista realizada a Carlos López Estrada, joven director de diversos videoclips y muy interesantes trabajos.

Uno de sus más recientes proyectos lo hemos mostrado a detalle en HeM y seguro lo recordarán (además de que ha sido uno de nuestros posts más vistos),  estamos hablando del fantástico videoclip Chocolate de Jesse & Joy.

Así mismo el motivo de la entrevista es para darle un espacio de presentación a Carlos que se incorpora como redactor ocasional en Hecho en Motion, le damos la bienvenida y  que disfruteis la entrevista!

1.HeM: Hola Carlos, para empezar ¿Por qué no nos cuentas un poco de ti y a lo que te dedicas?

Carlos: Me gustaría decir que soy director pero todavía me siento un poco raro diciéndolo. No sé por qué pero se siente raro. Pero bueno lo diré…soy un director.

1.HeM: Hi Carlos, for a starter, tell us a little bit about you and what you do?

Carlos: I’d like to say I’m a director but I still feel a little bit weird saying it. I don’t know why but it feels weird. But okay I’ll say it…I’m a director.

2.HeM: ¿Por qué dedicarte a ésto?, ¿Tienes algún recuerdo de por qué te motivaste a entrar a éste mundo?

Carlos: Crecí dentro de una familia muy interesante. Mi madre y padre son productores de televisión, mi abuela es actriz y mi abuelo periodista. Las conversaciones que oía en la casa siempre eran divertidas y creo que poco a poco me fueron conviritiendo a este mundo extrano. Una Navidad, mi mamá me dió una pequeña cámara de 8mm y la usé durante toda mi infancia para grabar películas con mis amigos. Acompañaba a mi madre a la grabación de sus programas y me paraba a un lado de Charlie Manzano, el camarógrafo principal. El me expicaba lo que iba a hacer en la toma y yo la grababa al mismo tiempo que él, después la veíamos juntos y me gritaba cuando hacía algo mal. Creo que nunca tomé la decisión de hacer películas…sólo fue la forma en la que se dieron las cosas.

2.HeM: How come do you end up working on this? Do you have an early memory of it?

Carlos: I grew up in a really interesting family. My mom and dad are TV producers, my grandma is an actress and my grandfather a journalist. Their conversations at home were always really fun and I think that little by little, they pulled me into this weird world that I’m now a part of. When I was 8, My mom gave me an 8mm camera for Christmas and I grew up making movies with it. I would go on set with her and always stand by this one camera man called Charlie Manzano. He would explain to me whatever he was planning on doing for a scene, then I would film it on my little camera and show him what I had filmed. He screamed at me for messing up and gave me high fives when I didn’t. I grew up making movies and I don’t think I ever made the conscious decision to do actually do this seriously…I guess things just happened.

3.HeM: ¿Cuál es el proceso que llevas al preparar tus proyectos en su etapa inicial?

Carlos: La verdad no sé. Soy muy desorganizado. Tengo 21 años y a veces siento que no tengo ni idea de lo que estoy haciendo. Creo que apenas estoy comenzando a desarollar un entendimiento de lo que estoy grabando y lo que quiero grabar. Creo que éstos próximos años van a ser muy importantes en mi crecimiento como director y espero poder crecer mucho más….espero.

3.HeM: What’s the process of your work at an early stage of any project?

Carlos: I don’t really know. I am very unorganized. I’m 21 years old and sometimes feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. I think I’m just beginning to develop an understanding of what I am filming and what I would like to film. I think that this next year or two will be very important in my growth as a director and will hopefully only get better…hopefully.

4.HeM: La mayoría de tus trabajos han sido vídeos musicales, ¿Cuál crees que es la mayor cualidad o la mayor diferencia que encuentras al trabajar con grupos de habla Inglesa VS. los grupos de habla hispana?

Carlos: No me puedo quejar porque todos los artistas con los que he trabajado han sido extremadamente atentos y felices de trabajar conmigo. Es un sentimiento extraño colaborar con artistas los cuales conocía cuando era pequeño y vivía en México. Ahora que vivo en Los Ángeles, me gustaría empezar a trabajar con más artistas locales. Hice mis primeros videos con un grupo que me encanta llamado “Saint Motel” y creo que hasta ahora, son los videos que más me gustan  porque me fascina su música… Creo que tengo que seguir trabajando con ellos para siempre.

4.HeM: A good part of your work is composed by music videos, What you think is the best quality or biggest difference when working with English speaking bands vs. Spanish speaking bands?

Carlos: I really can’t complain because I really enjoy making music videos. All of the artists I’ve worked with have been extremely nice to me and excited to be making the videos with me. It’s a weird feeling to be working with people that I used to hear about when I was young and living in Mexico. Now that I live in LA, I’m trying to focus more on working with local artists. I did my first music videos with a band I really like called Saint Motel and to this day, those are still the videos that I like the most. Maybe its just because I really like their music. Maybe I should just work with them forever.

5.HeM: Tienes bastante material de acción viva y por lo tanto mucho contacto con actores reales, ahora podemos ver tu trabajo en stop motion en el video de Chocolate, ¿Qué te gusta más? ¿Son cosas muy diferentes? ¿Volverías a dirigir trabajos de animación?

Carlos: Había trabajado con stop motion en películas para la escuela pero nunca en un proyecto tan importante como lo fue Chocolate. Me daba un poco de miedo porque no sabía lo que estaba haciendo pero creo que con el equipo que logré formar, el proceso se volvió mucho más fácil. Todos se mudaron a mi casa por un mes entero y diario trabajábamos construyendo los sets, animando y editando. Fue como un campamento de verano con señores sudorosos y barbones.

5.HeM: You have a lot of live action video direction therefore you have a lot of contact with real actors, and now we can see your work with stop motion animation with Chocolate video, What do you like the most? Are they very different to direct? Would you be interested in doing more animation videos?

Carlos: I had done some stop motion in school but never anything like Chocolate. I was scared because I had no idea what I had gotten myself into but I feel like the team we manged to put together made the whole process very painless. They all moved in to my house for about a month and we worked everyday building sets, shooting and editing. It was like summer camp with sweaty, bearded men.

6.HeM: ¿Cómo le presentas a los actores tu visión del proyecto, y cómo llegas a una zona de confort en tus proyectos?

Carlos: Los videos de música son muy interesantes ya que el tiempo que tienes para ejecutar es mínimo. Normalmente tienes alrededor de 2 semanas para planear una mini película de 3 minutos. Son una prueba de rapidez y precisión… da miedo la velocidad con la que todo mundo se mueve. Creo que nunca se llega a una zona de confort… por lo menos yo no creo haber llegado a una. Pero la verdad sí me divierto mucho… considero que eso es importante.

6.HeM: How do you reach the actors to show them your vision of the project, or how do you get with them into a secure or comfort zone in your projects?

Carlos: Music videos are very interesting because the time you get to execute a concept is minimal. We usually have close to 2 weeks to plan a 3 minute long movie. It’s a test in speed and precision…its scary how fast everyone has to move and think. I don’t think that a comfort zone is ever reached…or at least for me, I can’t really say I’ve ever reached it. I do have a lot of fun tho…which I think is important.

7.HeM: ¿Cuál ha sido el trabajo que más has disfrutado?

Carlos: Estoy trabajando ahora en un video para la Copa del Mundo en Sudáfrica y creo que hasta hoy, es el proyecto que más he disfrutando. Logramos crear un ambiente similar a Chocolate ya que todos los departamentos estan trabajando en mi casa al mismo tiempo.

Tenemos a los directores de arte y carpinteros en el patio cortando madera y pintando. En el garage está el departamento de vestuario y dentro de la casa la coreógrafa ensayando con los bailarines. En mi antecomedor tenemos una pequeña oficina de producción y diario todos nos juntamos en la noche para cenar.

Disfruto esto muchísmo porque siento que el equipo que hemos formado es realmente especial. Todos son jóvenes, creativos y con muchas ganas de hacer las cosas. Phil, el director de arte, acaba de enterarse que va a ser papá y de verdad siento que voy a ser tío. Me hace muy feliz saber que logramos hacer de nuestro equipo de producción una pequena familia.

¿Con quién de los artistas te gustaría volver a trabajar?

En cuanto artistas, Erik Rubin tiene mi lugar de favorito. Hablé con él por teléfono la primera vez y me dijo que había visto mis videos y quería que yo dirigiera “No Para de Llover”. Me dijo: “Haz lo que quieras y no te preocupes que yo ya decidí que tu lo vas a hacer… confío en ti…en serio haz lo que quieras.” Eso no sucede muy a menudo…me gustaría que todos los artistas fueran como él.

7.HeM: Which project has been your favorite so far?

Carlos: I am working on a video for the world cup and I think that so far, it has been my favorite project. We manged to create an environment similar to Chocolate where every one has been working at my house together for the past 2 weeks. The people from art department are cutting wood and painting in the courtyard, wardrobe people are sowing stuff in the garage, the choreographer works inside with the dancers, we made a production office in my dinning room and we all get together everyday for dinner. I really enjoy this because I feel like the team that we have created is really special. They are all young, creative and really determined to make things happen. Phil, our production designer just found out that he is becoming a father and for some reason I feel like I’m becoming an uncle. I love Phil and it makes me really happy to know that we managed to turn our working crew into somewhat of a family.

and with whom (artist/band) would you like to work again?

In terms of artists, Erik Rubin holds the number one on my list. I spoke to him on the phone for the first time and he told me he had seen my videos and he wanted me to direct “No Para de Llover.” He said: ” Do whatever you want and don’t worry because I already decided that you are making the video…I trust you…seriously, do whatever you want.” That doesn’t happen often…I wish everyone was like that.

8.HeM: ¿Quién dirías que es tu más grande influencia o inspiración?

Carlos: Suena cursi pero mi más grande influencia es mi madre. Somos muy buenos amigos y ella es una persona admirable. Creo que el teatro también ha inspirado mucho mi trabajo. Mi abuela era actriz de teatro y crecí viendo obras casi cada semana.

Cáda vez que regresaba del teatro, intentaba  recrear todo lo que acababa de ver. Me acuerdo que mi abuela fue la bruja de El Mago de Oz y durante la obra la hacían “volar” con cables… una semana después mi primo se rompió el brazo por caerse de una cuerda que yo le construí para colgarlo de un arbol.

También grababa películas con mis amigos y siempre hacíamos algo peligroso cuando nadie estaba en casa. Mi madre se acaba de cambiar de casa hace unos meses y encontró una caja con todos los videos que hacía de chiquito…casi le da un infarto cuando vió que hacíamos incendios y nos aventábamos de las ventanas a los 11 años.

8.HeM: Who would you pick as your biggest influence or inspiration?

Carlos: It sounds too cute but my biggest influence has been my mother…We are great friends and she is an admirable human being. I also think that my work is greatly inspired by theater. My grandmother was a theater actress and I grew up seeing a different play almost every week. Every time I came back from the theater, I tired to re-create by myself everything I had just seen. I remember that one time my grandmother played the evil witch in The Wizard of Oz and she used to fly all around the stage on cables. A week later, my cousin broke his arm on a special rig I built to hang him from a tree.

I would also film movies with my friends and would always make them do all of these dangerous stunts when no one was home. My mom just moved to a new house a couple of months ago and found a box with all of the videos I filmed when I was young. She almost got a heart attack when she saw that we used to set stuff on fire and jump out of windows when we were ten or eleven years old.

9.HeM: ¿Actualmente qué equipo de software y hardware utilizas o te gusta usar?

Carlos: Las personas de post producción me odian porque no conozco mucho de tecnología y siempre hago un cochinero de todos los archivos que toco.

Edito casi todos mis videos pero no tengo mucho conocimiento de efectos digitales… creo que esa es la razón principal por la que practicamente intento  hacer todos los efectos. No es una decisión de estilo… es sólo que no tengo ninguna otra opción. Algún día tendré que aprender After Effects…tu deberías de darme clases.

9.HeM: What equipment (hardware or software ) is the one that you use right now? or the one you like to use the most?

Carlos: Post production people hate me because I am not very technically savvy and usually make a mess out of all the files I handle. I usually edit my own videos but don’t really know much about digital effects…I think that’s why I usually try to do most of the gags in my videos practically. It isn’t much of a stylistic chocie…I just can’t really do anything else. Some day I’ll have to learn Afer Effects…maybe you can teach me, Aldo.

10.HeM: Es difícil predecir el futuro, ¿En algún momento piensas en ello y te imaginas qué tipo de proyectos estarás realizando próximamente?

Carlos: Me gustaría hacer 100 videos de música más. También me encantaría dirigir teatro, comerciales y largometrajes. Toco batería y todavía tengo esperanza de empezar algún proyecto musical algún día. Si vives en Los Angeles (USA) y quieres empezar una banda, avísame!

10.HeM: It´s very difficult to predict the future, do you think about it? do you imagine what type of projects are you going to be involved with in the near future?

Carlos: I would like to make a hundred more music videos. I also really want to direct theater. And Commercials. And Features. I play drums and am still hopeful to start a musical project someday. If you live in LA and want to start a band, let me know!

11.HeM: Para finalizar, ¿por qué no nos das un pequeño adelanto de lo que estás preparando?

Carlos: Estoy trabajando con un amigo en un guión para un cortometraje. La historia está basada en una historia de su abuelo de 89 años que vive en Buffalo. No puedo decir mucho porque apenas la estamos desarollando.

Acabo de regresar de un viaje para conocerlo y estube un fin de semana con su familia para celebrar “Passover”. Fue una experiencia muy interesante y me di cuenta que nustras familias tienen mucho en común. Espero grabar en unos cuantos meses pero no sé que voy a hacer hasta entonces. Acabo de comprar una Vespa entonces espero poder conocer Los Angeles un poco mejor.

11.HeM: To end with this interview, would you like to give us an insight of what else are you preparing right now?

Carlos: I’m working with a friend of mine on a script for a short film. It’s a great story about his 89 year old gradpa who lives in Buffalo. I can’t say too much about it because we are still developing the story. I just got back from a weekend trip to meet his grandpa and his family during Passover and it was a great experience. I had never been at a Passover dinner before and being there, I realized that both our families are very similar. I am not very sure what I will be doing until then. I just got a Vespa so I am hoping to explore Los Angeles a little more.
